Unknown Arias for Senesino

the people involved…

Executive Director of the OAE, Crispin Woodhead, commented:
there is no greater privilege for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment than to be able to undertake projects where new light is shed on neglected areas of the repertoire.  This remarkable project with Randall Scotting is an opportunity not only to revive forgotten delights but also to tell the story that connects them all.  As Handel was in his day, we are so much the richer for knowing the work of his most talented contemporaries.  We are delighted that we will be working with Randall under the baton of Laurence Cummings, one of the most distinguished interpreters of eighteenth-century repertoire’.
Developing this solo album and singing the repertoire I most love with such esteemed colleagues is collaboration at its finest – this music is in excellent hands.  We will be working with the label Signum Classics, who have worldwide distribution to over 20 countries and they are particularly savvy with online streaming, placing this music in front of a very wide audience.  The release concert will be presented at the London Handel Festival, where music like this has been a focus for over 30 years.

a little background…

Discovering and performing forgotten Baroque masterpieces has become a passion, and I’ve taken part in a couple of these projects already.  The first was a production at the Spoleto festival in Italy – singing Vivaldi’s newly reconstructed opera Ercole su’l Termodonte, which was released on DVD.  A few years later, I sang the title role in Antonio Caldara’s oratorio Santo Stefano with an ensemble in Budapest which was released on CD.  A deeper curiosity about the 18th-century Italian opera I was singing led me to complete a PhD at the Royal College of Music in London.

While at the RCM, I spent several years looking through manuscripts in archives and what I discovered amazed me; a trove of incredible arias, all by composers at the top of their game, and I just knew then that I had to record this music.  I finished my PhD in 2018 and with this research I’ve developed a program of Baroque arias that will finally see the light of day.

about the music…

An eccentric rascal, yet an undeniably accomplished performer, the alto castrato Senesino is known today almost exclusively by the 13 operas Handel composed for him in London during the 1720s and early 1730s: operas like Giulio Cesare, Rodelinda, and Orlando. Yet, he performed in more than 100 operas by many composers and racked up accolades throughout Europe as one of the most popular singers of his day. I’ll record the best of what I’ve discovered: 14 arias from 11 operas by 7 different composers who were all highly respected in their lifetimes but are virtually unknown today, including Bononcini, Orlandini, Ariosti, Giaj, Lotti, Ristori, and Giacomelli. There is so much brilliant music written for his exceptional voice that has been left unsung for far too long. Comprised entirely of modern-day premieres, this is an opportunity to discover unknown music composed for one of history’s most celebrated singers!
